Dental Extractions: All You Need to Know

Dental extractions are sometimes necessary when a tooth becomes too damaged to save. Sometimes, it’s recommended that a damaged tooth be removed to prevent infection from spreading, which can damage other teeth. Extractions can also reduce strain on the surrounding teeth.

When Is Dental Extraction Needed?

Extractions are performed for a wide variety of reasons, including:

- Severe tooth decay or infection that cannot be treated with a filling, crown, or other treatment

- A tooth that is crowding other teeth and preventing normal oral function

- Orthodontic treatment to make space for teeth that are coming in crooked

- Impacted wisdom teeth that do not have enough room to come in properly

- Severe injuries to the jaw or mouth

- Severe gum disease that may require tooth extraction

- Severe tooth misalignment that may require tooth extraction

- Teeth that cannot be restored with root canal therapy

How Dental Extraction Is Performed?

A dental extraction is performed under local anesthesia. An anesthetic injection is administered to the gum area around the tooth. The anesthetic numbs the gum tissue and tooth area, so the patient will not feel any pain during the procedure.

Then, the dentist raises the gum away from the tooth. He may use a tool called an elevator to elevate the gum and use a pair of forceps, which grasp the tooth and loosen it from the gum.

What Happens After Dental Extractions

Your mouth will need time to heal from a dental extraction. Usually, your dentist will recommend pain relievers to help with the discomfort or swelling. If your pain is severe or lasts longer than a few days, contact your dentist.

Depending on the type of dental extraction you had, your dentist may place sutures. You are sent home with specific instructions on how to manage your extraction site at home. For the first 24 to 48 hours after your extraction, you’ll need to eat soft foods and avoid chewing at the extraction site.
