Stress is a normal physical response to certain triggers. The body releases hormones, which trigger a response in the body to prepare it for action. However, for some people, this response can become chronic and overwhelming, resulting in numerous physiological and psychological symptoms. These include changes in appetite, insomnia, anxiety, depression, muscle tension, and more. These symptoms are not simply the result of being busy or not getting enough sleep. They are symptoms of mental stress and can be harmful if left untreated. The effects of long-term stress can be detrimental to your oral and overall health.

When our bodies experience stress, our muscles become tense and tight. The jaw is no different! When stressed, the jaw muscles tighten, and as a result, the teeth are pushed outward, and the jawbone is pushed out of alignment. This can lead to teeth grinding at night as well as TMJ disorder. (TMJ disorder is a common cause of facial pain and can be caused by a variety of issues, including the misalignment of the teeth or trauma to the jaw.)

During times of high stress, many people tend to neglect their oral hygiene routine, especially brushing and flossing. This lack of dental care can increase the risk of gum disease, which can also lead to other serious health issues. Additionally, certain medications taken for stress and anxiety can lead to dry mouth, which increases the risk of tooth decay and cavities. 

How Can You Manage Your Stress?

If you are suffering from chronic stress, it is important to take steps to reduce your stress levels and improve your overall quality of life. Some coping mechanisms include:

  • Exercising regularly releases endorphins and reduce stress chemicals in the brain
  • Practicing meditation to quiet the mind and improve the mood
  • Eating a healthy diet rich in whole foods, whole grains, lean proteins, and plenty of fruits and veggies
  • Getting plenty of rest and managing your time effectively to avoid feelings of overwhelm and fatigue
  • Making time for social engagement and connecting with a supportive network of friends, family, and coworkers
